Charles R. “Bob” Kremenak was born 1931 in Newell, Iowa. He graduated with a D.D.S. from the University of Iowa in 1955 and served as a dental officer in the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1955–58 with duty on the icebreaker USS Atka from 1956–58. He made two Dew-line cruises and two Deepfreeze cruises during the IGY.

Kremenak was on the faculty of the College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa from 1961–1994. He served as Membership Chairman of the American Polar Society from 2001–2004 and has been a member of the APS Board of Governors since 2004.
